CELIAC TIP:
At summer parties and cookouts, the grill is a common source of cross-contact. Always ask that your food be placed on a piece of aluminum foil before going onto the grill.
Staying gluten-free in the summertime is not easy, especially at cookouts and barbecues. You've got to plan ahead, make sure the host knows that you're gluten-free, and often bring your own food and snacks.
Possible sources of gluten include burger patties, processed meats, salads, processed cheese, and veggie burgers, not to mention BBQ sauces, salad dressings, and marinades.
The grill and serving stations are often sources of cross contact, but there are ways you can minimize your risk, including checking the utensils, condiments, and observing how your food is prepared.
Finally, it helps to stay positive. To avoid the risk, eat beforehand. Also, feel free to use the opportunity to educate others about celiac disease and your condition.
